Fairfax Covid Memorial

Initial concept

The art installation was created by Julieta Guillermet, Davide Prete and Hector Montalvo.

This memorial project aims to encapsulate the collective human experience of the COVID-19 pandemic, from the initial feelings of fear and uncertainty to the shift towards grief and mourning, and finally, the emergence of strength, unity, and the overcoming of adversity. The design uses hands as a symbol of connection, with each connection represented by a block, highlighting how communities rallied to support one another during these challenging times.

Fabrication

The sculptural tower, with its twisting form and gradual shedding of pieces, embodies the transformation and hope that mark the journey through the pandemic. The opacity of the blocks decreases as the memorial ascends, symbolizing the progression from the onset to the culmination of the pandemic, while the spaces between the blocks signify missed connections and experiences.

The base of the memorial features a circular timeline that depicts the unfolding of events during the COVID-19 pandemic, beginning in late 2019 and extending to the present day. This timeline, as it completes its circle, represents a journey characterized by challenges, scientific advancements, collective resilience, and the ongoing effort to mitigate the pandemic's effects.

Water flowing from the top of the tower, guided by special nozzles through a stainless steel pipe, creates a soothing vibration as it cascades down the glass structure, symbolizing healing. This water feature adds an element of serenity and reflection to the memorial, inviting visitors to contemplate the impact of the pandemic and the path toward recovery.
